Red Chinese Coin Cat Urn
Sale Price$229.95
This wonderful cat urn was created by Sally Jaffee, a brilliant ceramic artist known for using Japanese slip and etched techniques on white stoneware.
This urn may be one-of-a-kind…we have yet to see a piece like it by Sally Jaffee anywhere else.
Glossy deep red glaze frames a matte cream edge with hand-painted cat silhouettes.
The lid features a matte black handle and a wonderful little Chinese coin. According to Google Images, this coin is a Chinese Qianlong Tongbao cash coin, minted during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty (1735–1796), made of brass or copper.
Placing a coin on top of an urn follows the Chinese tradition of “ghost money” – ensuring that the deceased cat will live comfortably and securely in the underworld.
Signed by the artist.
